1. Skipping flatness checks. Large-format tiles amplify substrate waves, lipping and hollow spots. Check and correct the base before adhesive is mixed.
2. Closing wet areas before waterproofing is proven. Showers, balconies and other wet zones need the specified membrane details and hold-points before tiles hide them.
3. Using the wrong adhesive or grout system. Interior walls, exterior paving interfaces, large porcelain and persistently wet areas do not all need the same products.
4. Ignoring movement joints. Long runs, solar-facing surfaces and changes in substrate need movement accommodation rather than rigidly locking every joint.
5. Starting without a layout plan. Poor datum lines create narrow cuts at visible edges, misaligned niches and awkward transitions between rooms.
6. Grouting or loading the surface too early. Adhesives and waterproofing systems need their stated curing windows; rushing the programme can trap moisture and weaken the installation.
7. Underestimating detail work in the quote. Patterns, mitred corners, trims, niches, falls and making-good all add labour and should be agreed before work starts.
